Companies and Security Outsourcing

With this in mind, it becomes understandable why companies
put great amounts of their finances in funding for these security measures. In
recent years, whether for a security force or network protection, security
outsourcing is becoming a popular choice among businesses. Outsourcing
information systems is also seen as a great alternative to ensure the safety of
a company’s most valuable information. In answer to this growing demand,
outsourcing providers are striving hard to provide high-standard and reliable
network security systems for their clients worldwide.

For many businesses, both large corporations and smaller
companies, security outsourcing is considered to be a more practical and
efficient way of acquiring protection.

In fact, the Global Information Security Survey of 2002
reports that around 66 percent of businesses around the globe outsource on or
more of its security measures.

Why? First of all, outsourcing security is a lot cheaper
than preferring traditional security or purchasing expensive security
equipment. If we speak about network protection, it would cost a company huge
amounts of money to take care of its own system.

Network security protection does not only cover one
aspect. It is a diverse collection of different strategies. Some of these
strategies include the following:

  • access control which has to do with passwords;
  • firewall
  • IDS or intrusion detection system which is used
    to detect unauthorized access to files and systems;
  • Virtual Private Network (VPN) which allows secured
    connections to the server;

  • content filtering;
  • anti-virus protection systems;

  • encryption or transferring messages through secret codes;

Second, many companies feel that they do not have enough
expertise to manage an in-house security personnel, particularly in managing
their network security.  Protecting a company’s
information system requires planning, constant monitoring, analysis and strict
implementation. These processes involve highly-technical skills and knowledge
which poses a big challenge for any company.

If you are small business owner, you might have some reservations
about submitting your company’s security to another firm. Indeed, there lies
the question of loyalty and trust.  Is it
really sensible to trust someone else about your company’s plans and the most
confidential information? What kind of guarantee do you have that your security
outsourcer will stand by your side at all times? Should you really outsource
security operations?

The truth is, the task of providing security all boils down
to one important factor. Honesty. Of course, security operations will always involve people. This
means, finding honest people who are faithful to their sworn duties is the
key.  Whether this people will work for
you in-house or from an outsourcing provider, you still need the assurance that
they would do their job right.

Therefore, a thorough investigation on your part is strongly
advised. Know your options. Security outsourcers provide different services
for their clients. For example, aside from security hardware and software
protection systems, they also have security consultants that offer support and
monitoring both from on-site and remote locations.

Don’t just obtain the service of a security provider who
cannot show proof of their credentials. On a subject as
sensitive as this, it is imperative to validate, authenticate and confirm the
outsourcing provider’s capability and credibility.  Make sure that you understand all terms that
is included in their service.
